DIY Friday: Bedside Table Makeover

Last week I posted about my recent excursion to Ruff & Ready, a furniture store on 14th Street in Washington, DC where you never quite know what's lurking around the next corner. I was on a mission to find a bedside table, something I'd been after for quite a while.

In an ideal world, I would have called it a day once I found the Bungalow 5 Isabella table- the navy color is perfect for my bedroom, I love the grasscloth finish, and the curvy details around the drawers are playful without being over the top. As with most of my decor crushes the only problem was in the pricetag.

So plan B brought me to Ruff & Ready to look for a deal that I could then customize as I saw fit. I scored this solid wood table in the clearance basement for $43- here it is after I gave it a light sanding. Sure it didn't have drawers, but it fit nicely with my size restrictions and I like the open bookshelf look.

Upon the suggestion of the helpful employees at Ace Hardware in Tenleytown, first I primed...

Then I painted...and got awfully concerned that my table was turning out more "Sesame Street" than Bungalow 5! It looked awfully "little boy" blue!

However, after a few more coats I was relieved to find that the color darkened up to a nice deep navy. But even after the paint, it was just missing something...

Enter my new favorite obsession- nailhead trim! I still had a bunch leftover from my headboard project and this table was just calling out for it. It had the perfect crannies on the legs for it, and the perfect 1" border on the outside of the top surface.

With this kit, the "nailheads" come in a continuous strip, and every 5 nails or so there is a nail with a hole in it for you to put one actual nailhead in to secure the strip. It's pure genius. No, this is not what you'd find on a chair from Hickory Chair, but for my DIY purposes it works just fine.

Rather than just end at every corner, I wrapped it around the whole top of the table (the flash makes the color look much brighter than it really is, I promise!).

I was thrilled with the finished product- the trim really elevated an otherwise-ho hum table. I might get a piece of glass cut add an extra level of polish.
