MoS Holiday Movie Madness

When the weather outside is frightful, there's nothing better than cozying up on the couch with a feel-good Christmas movie. Here are a few of our favorites we'll be watching this Christmas season.

The Holiday

Sunny LA, snowy UK, dreamy Jude Law, funny Jack Black...this movie has the best of all worlds and I am completely addicted. Anyone feeling a little frustrated by life will take heart after watching this movie, even if it is completely unrealistic! What can I say, I can never resist a Nancy Myers movie...I am so looking forward to seeing It's Complicated next week!

One draw of this movie, as in all of Nancy Meyers's movies, is the fabulous interiors!

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

This movie needs no explanation! It's an institution.

Love Actually

I finally got around to watching this movie- a series of intertwined vignettes about love that takes place in London around Christmas time- and was pleasantly surprised. I had a hard time trying to imagine Hugh Grant as the Prime Minister chasing a klutzy assistant, but the other stories are much more heartfelt- the man hopelessly in love with his best friend's wife, the happy mother who realizes that her husband is having an affair, the widowed stepfather forging a bond with his stepson- it sounds depressing, but I promise this is an uplifting movie about the many forms of love in the world.

Miracle on 34th Street

As we get older, sometimes we forget the excitement and wonder that children have at Christmas, and this movies is a great reminder. Not gonna lie, the remake is not bad either!

Lifetime/Hallmark Christmas Movies

Ok, so this is more of a genre than a specific movie, but it's still one of my favorite parts of Christmas. These movies are all variations on the same two themes- a stressed single mom wondering how to pay the bills has a chance encounter with a kindly stranger who happens to be a single, good looking man, and in the holiday spirit love ensues, usually with a little nudge from Santa. Or the lives of a family short on money but big on Christmas spirit collide with that of rich, but morally bankrupt, professional (usually a lawyer), and in the Christmas spirit, he steps in to help the struggling family and in turn receives the gift of knowing that there's more to life than work and money. What can I say, these movies get me every time. Especially when they star has-been 90210 cast members.

Home Alone

Yes, I first saw this movie when I was about 8, and McCauly Caulkin is hardly that cute blonde kid he once was. Yet I am still entertained by this movie about a little boy accidentally stranded at home as his harried family flies to Paris, and his ingenious plans to thwart the pesky burglars that come around. The sequels, however- do NOT even bother.

It's a Wonderful Life

I must admit....I have never seen this movie! Isn't that horrible? Am I really an American? It is my Christmas goal to watch it this year!
