Retro Cape Town style

So today we're taking a sneak peek into a cool, retro Capetonian home. This space belongs to Julie who works at ELLE Decoration, is a DIY queen and stylist of note. She also happens to be my sister, yes, I do have a very creative family!

I've featured some of Julie's art here before and recently spoke about the caravans being decorated by SA stylists for the new Old Mac Daddy Trailor Park and yes, Julie's caravan is true Afrikaaner style (For Better or for Boerewors) which you can see more of here.

Julie has a love for all things vintage, retro and South African and a bit of an obsession with Tretchikoff paintings! Here are a few pics of her home and some of her fun pieces she's collected over the years...

Some inside info from Julie...

Your favourite sa designer/artist?
Frank van Reenen is still one of my favourite artists. I am lucky enough to own two of his creations.

Your latest obsession?
Wine... lots of it, especially from Springfield winery in Robertson and the British Elle Decoration magazine.

Your best decor find/buy?
I have a few... my 1950's record player, prints by Tretchikoff and Lynch, my cuckoo clock, bokkie wall light and a matching display cabinet and table that I bought from separate owners!

Do you have any DIY tips for adding style to one's home on a budget?
Get creative! Make big abstract artworks, paint a wall a gorgeous colour, recover old cushions or reupholster tired looking furniture, box frame pictures or postcards to create an interesting wall display.

Your fave breakfast spots in ct?
Oooh, this is a tricky one! I love Queen of Tarts in Obs for the most beautiful decor with sun streaming in through big glass windows and excellent food (and chocolate cupcakes!), Bird's Boutique for understated style and delicious home-cooked food, Café Max in De Waterkant for a hidden away gem and something a little more posh, Shelley's in Kloof Street for lazy days and great service and the Biscuit Mill for late breakfasts and something a bit social and arty.

What is the one "must visit place" for a visitor to cape town?
A walk up Lion's Head is the ultimate for any local or tourist. The 360˚ views are spectacular and it's a fairly quick walk (1 and a half hours to the top and back down) which can be done anytime from sunrise to sunset.

Thanks so much Julie! Your DIY tips are brilliant as always and now I'm dying for a long lazy breakfast at any one of these gorgeous spots, I think I'll have to treat myself this weekend! So what do you think, are you a fan of Julie's retro style?
